Suspension of Surfer Alan Cleland Jr. Raises Questions Amid Lack of Investigations
Alan Cleland Jr. has been suspended by the World Surf League (WSL) following serious allegations, but no police investigations have been confirmed in Australia or Tahiti.
The suspension reportedly stems from an incident involving a teenage Australian female surfer and several men at a private gathering in Tahiti after the Tahiti Pro in August. While New South Wales police are aware of the allegations, they have not confirmed an investigation, stating that the matter is being handled by authorities in French Polynesia.
As of October 12, Tahitian media reported that the public prosecutor's office in Tahiti had not opened any official investigation. Cleland Jr.'s sponsors have removed him from their athlete pages, suggesting he is indeed the suspended surfer. Meanwhile, his ex-girlfriend has made separate allegations of physical and sexual assault against him. The Tahitian Surfing Federation confirmed that none of the individuals involved are affiliated with their organization, expressing relief but also shock over the allegations.
