Suzie Miller's Play Celebrates Women in AFL at Brisbane Festival

Strong is the New Pretty, a play by Suzie Miller, premiered at the Brisbane Festival, celebrating the efforts of women who contributed to the establishment of the Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) competition.

The production features three main characters inspired by key figures in AFLW history, including a lawyer and the first female AFL Commissioner, portrayed by Lucy Bell, and a women's football development manager, played by Tara Morice. Amber McMahon takes on the role of the first female coach of the Adelaide Crows.

The play combines humor and poignant storytelling, showcasing the challenges faced by women in sports, including discrimination and societal barriers. It runs at the Brisbane Festival until September 19, followed by a national tour across several cities.
