Swansea's Vitor Matos Comments on New Rules for Match Officials

Vitor Matos, the head coach of Swansea City, has indicated that match officials will require time to adapt to new regulations intended to enhance the pace of football. This was highlighted after Swansea's defeat to Birmingham City in the EFL Cup first round.

The new rules for the 2026-27 season include a five-second countdown for throw-ins and free-kicks. If there is an unfair delay at a throw-in, possession will be awarded to the opposing team, and a goal-kick taking longer than five seconds will result in a corner for the opponent.

Matos noted that the implementation of these rules presents challenges for referees, who must manage a significant amount of information. He acknowledged that while the intention behind the rules is to quicken the game, it complicates the officials' responsibilities. Additionally, other regulations this season require substitutes to wait on the sidelines for at least a minute if a player takes longer than ten seconds to exit the field.
