Tamil Nadu Hockey Coach Aims for Cohesive Team Play
William Murray, the high-performance coach for the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN), is focused on transforming the State team into a cohesive unit rather than just a winning one. Since joining the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) in May under a two-year contract, he aims to cultivate an engaging style of hockey that attracts spectators.
Murray, an FIH coach educator, previously conducted Level 3 coaching courses for Hockey India before taking on his current role. His experience includes coaching in Hong Kong and Belgium, as well as leading England's under-18 and Scotland's under-21 teams. He has noted that the lack of early exposure to artificial turf has impacted the technical and tactical skills of Indian players.
He is implementing rigorous tactical concepts to enhance team play, emphasizing the need for a connected approach on the field. Murray also aims to enrich the overall hockey ecosystem in Tamil Nadu, ensuring that young players from diverse backgrounds have opportunities to develop their skills and reach their potential.
