Tampa Bay Rays Owner Hints at Increased Payroll with New Stadium
The Tampa Bay Rays, historically known for their modest payrolls, may soon experience a substantial increase in spending due to a new ballpark and surrounding development.
Patrick Zalupski, the Rays' majority owner, stated that the new stadium could enable the team to invest in the top half of the league, potentially even reaching a top-10 payroll. The Tampa Bay area, being the 11th-largest media market in the U.S. with around 3.5 million residents, is expected to support this level of financial commitment.
Currently, the Rays have over $25 million in payroll obligations for 2027, with key players like designated hitter Yandy Diaz and pitcher Freddy Peralta entering free agency soon. Additionally, the team is considering long-term contracts for promising young players, including third baseman Junior Caminero and catcher Liam Hicks, as they prepare for a potential payroll increase.
