Tanvi Patri Wins U17 Title at Badminton Asia Championships
Tanvi Patri, a 15-year-old badminton player from Odisha, won the U17 girls' singles title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships on September 13, 2026, in Chengdu, China. She triumphed over fellow Indian Shaina Manimuthu in a closely contested final, finishing with scores of 11-15, 15-10, and 15-12.
Patri, who was seeded second, had a challenging path to the final. After receiving a bye in the first round, she faced a tough match against China's Zhou Jing Li, winning 18-16, 12-15, 15-13. She then defeated Japan's Shizuku Kashio 15-9, 15-12, and secured her place in the final with a 15-8, 15-8 victory over China's Lin Heng Men in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she edged past China's Yu Ying Gui in a tense match that ended 15-9, 11-15, 15-11.
Manimuthu, the sixth seed, also had a strong tournament, including a quarterfinal win against Japan's Yui Itabashi and a semifinal victory over Anon Okimoto. Patri's victory marks the second consecutive year that the U17 girls' singles title has been won by an Indian player, following Diksha Sudhakar's win in 2025. Manimuthu earned a silver medal for her efforts.
In the U15 category, the boys' doubles team of Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma secured a bronze medal after losing in the semifinals to a pair from Chinese Taipei.
