Tatsuya Imai's Challenges and Future with the Astros
Tatsuya Imai, a right-handed pitcher for the Houston Astros, faced difficulties during his transition from NPB to MLB, finishing the season with a 4.93 ERA over 76 2/3 innings. He made 23 appearances, including 15 starts, but struggled significantly, failing to complete the first inning in three games and spending the last two months of the season primarily in the bullpen.
Imai has the option to opt out of his three-year, $54 million contract, but it is unlikely he will forfeit the $18 million due for the 2027 season. If he remains with the team, he may have another opportunity in the starting rotation, which currently lacks depth behind ace Hunter Brown.
To secure his place, Imai needs to develop a reliable third pitch, as he predominantly relied on his four-seamer and slider this past season. His slider showed promise with a high whiff rate, but his fastball was less effective, allowing a high hard-hit rate. Improving his pitch selection and control will be crucial for his success moving forward.
