Teams Agree to Shorten Race Distances for 2027

Racing teams have reached an agreement to shorten race distances for the 2027 season due to expected fuel consumption issues. The upper limit for races will be reduced from 305 kilometers to around 290 kilometers, which is estimated to be about three laps less.

This decision aims to address the energy challenges faced during some events this season. To accommodate increased fuel flow rates, which are set to rise, teams would need larger fuel tanks or a return to in-race refueling, both of which would necessitate significant car redesigns.

Given budget constraints and the desire to upgrade existing cars rather than develop new designs, teams opted for a standardized race distance. This proposal will be submitted to the F1 Commission for approval and will require ratification by the World Motor Sport Council.
