Teen Hiker Rescued in British Columbia Clarifies AI Misunderstanding
A 16-year-old hiker from Vancouver, Bryce Gowryluk, was rescued from Crown Mountain in British Columbia on October 4. Following his rescue, reports suggested that he required assistance due to using Claude AI for route planning.
Gowryluk clarified that he had primarily relied on Google Maps and AllTrails for three days before his hike. Although he did use Claude AI to help determine what to pack, he stated that he did not plan to hike the Widowmaker Arete, where he ultimately found himself in trouble. After taking a gondola to Grouse Mountain, he began his hike towards Crown Mountain but accidentally veered onto an unmarked route that led to a vertical climbing wall.
Despite his experience as an air cadet and certified belayer, he realized he was off course after several hours. Unable to proceed further, he called for help from a small ledge. Gowryluk expressed concern that the focus on his use of AI might discourage others from engaging in outdoor activities. He plans to continue hiking, with his next trip scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
