Tejaswin Shankar Makes History as First Indian Decathlete Medalist at Commonwealth Games

Tejaswin Shankar achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men's decathlon at the Commonwealth Games, securing a bronze in Glasgow on July 31, 2026.

Despite suffering from chronic patellar tendinitis, which had previously forced him to withdraw from the high jump event, Shankar finished the decathlon with a total of 7,976 points. He ended the first day in second place after five events but dropped to third after the javelin throw, ultimately maintaining his position after finishing fifth in the final event, the 1,500m.

The gold medal was claimed by Grenada's Lindon Victor with 8,096 points, while Canada's Damian Warner took silver with 8,036 points. This medal marks Shankar's second Commonwealth Games medal, following his bronze in the men's high jump at the 2022 Birmingham Games.
