Teofimo Lopez Claims WBA Welterweight Title with Victory Over Rolando Romero
Teofimo Lopez became a three-weight world champion after defeating Rolando Romero to claim the WBA 'Super' welterweight title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Lopez won the match by majority decision, with two judges scoring it 116-112 and 115-113, while a third judge had it as a draw at 114-114. Despite the victory, Lopez did not call out Jack Catterall, the number one challenger, instead expressing interest in fighting the winner of the upcoming WBC title bout between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn, or pursuing a unification match with IBF champion Liam Paro.
In this bout, Lopez controlled the fight against Romero, who was defending his title for the first time. Although Lopez suffered a cut above his right eye and was briefly rocked in the fifth round, he maintained his advantage throughout. With this win, Lopez improved his professional record to 23 victories in 25 fights, while Romero faced his third loss in 20 bouts.
