Teoscar Hernandez's Potential Return to Blue Jays Raises Concerns
The possibility of Teoscar Hernandez returning to the Toronto Blue Jays has generated nostalgia among fans, but it may not be a wise decision for the franchise. Hernandez, now 34 and playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, experienced a notable drop in performance this season, hitting .267 with 16 home runs and 64 RBIs over 125 games, a significant decline from his previous season's 33 home runs.
His defensive capabilities have also been a concern, as he has received negative ratings in the outfield over the last three years, suggesting he is better suited for a designated hitter role. However, the Blue Jays already have Anthony Santander filling that position. Additionally, acquiring Hernandez could hinder the development of younger players like Yohendrick Pinango, Jonatan Clase, and Charles McAdoo, who have shown promise in their recent performances.
Bringing Hernandez back would also come at a cost of $13 million for 2027, which is steep given his recent decline. The Blue Jays are advised to consider other market options instead, such as Seiya Suzuki, Randy Arozarena, Ian Happ, and Teruaki Sato.
