Texans GM Confirms No In-Season Contract Talks for C.J. Stroud

The Houston Texans have decided not to pursue contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud during the upcoming season. General manager Nick Caserio announced this decision on Tuesday, stating that if an agreement is not reached before the season opener against Buffalo on September 13, all discussions will be paused until next offseason.

Stroud, who was selected as the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, has already had his fifth-year option picked up, ensuring he remains under team control through 2027. Caserio had previously mentioned the possibility of an extension during training camp, but no deal is currently on the horizon.

In his three seasons with the Texans, Stroud has a record of 28-18 and led the team to the playoffs each year. He was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and achieved a career-high completion rate of 64% in 2025, helping Houston to a 12-5 record and a divisional playoff appearance.
