Texas Man Arrested for Threatening Voicemail Over Anime Access
A Texas man has been arrested following a voicemail he left expressing frustration over age verification laws that he claimed prevented him from accessing anime. Joseph Roy Ozment allegedly called the office of Governor Greg Abbott on July 25, using explicit language to demand the repeal of the laws he believed were blocking his access.
Ozment's voicemail included a statement threatening violence, which led authorities to take his comments seriously. He is currently facing charges for making a terroristic threat, a third-degree felony that could result in up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The voicemail was reportedly alarming enough for the governor's office staff to feel threatened.
The laws in question require age verification for app stores and adult websites, which may have impacted Ozment's ability to view certain content. While some argue that his comments were hyperbolic and not intended as a real threat, the legal implications of his statements will be determined by the courts.
