The Haunting Legacy of Frances Atherton at Penn State
Penn State University, known for its haunted reputation, is home to the story of Frances Atherton, whose spirit is believed to watch over her husband's burial site near the Old Botany Building.
George Atherton, the former university president, passed away on July 24, 1906, and was buried next to Schwab Auditorium after his family opted for a quieter location than the one suggested by the Pennsylvania Governor. Folklore suggests that Frances, although buried in Pine Hall Cemetery, can be seen on the top floor of the Old Botany Building.
Students walking alone on Pollock Road at night have reported feeling as if they are being watched, and staff members in the Old Botany Building have experienced unexplained phenomena, such as carpets rolling up and glass shattering. These encounters have led some to reconsider their skepticism about the haunting.
