Thomas Paehtz Celebrates 70th Birthday
Today marks the 70th birthday of Thomas Paehtz, a notable chess player from East Germany, who was born on September 4, 1956, in Erfurt.
Paehtz began his chess journey in a family of players and participated in his first international tournament at the under-20 championship in Zinnowitz. He achieved notable success in the East German Championships, winning the title twice in 1988 and 1990. He also represented East Germany in international matches and played a significant role in various team championships.
After German reunification, he shared first place in the 1993 German Championship and played in several leagues across Germany, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Paehtz earned the title of international master in 1984 and became a grandmaster in 1990. He has also contributed to the chess community as a coach, founding a chess school and mentoring young players.
