Thomas Silva Injured in Gran Piemonte Crash but Escapes Serious Harm
During the Gran Piemonte race on Thursday, cyclist Thomas Silva experienced a crash at the final corner, leading to a harrowing scene as four riders rode over his legs. Silva, a member of the XDS-Astana team, was attempting to sprint towards the finish when he lost control and collided with the fencing, causing him to fall onto the road.
Footage from the incident shows Silva in pain as the peloton sped past, with several riders unable to avoid him. Remarkably, he managed to stand up, remount his bike, and complete the race in 90th place. Team officials later confirmed that Silva did not sustain serious injuries, marking this race as his last for the 2026 season.
Silva, 24, had a notable season, including a stage win at the Giro d’Italia and victories in Spain. His crash is part of a troubling trend of safety incidents in recent races in Italy, prompting concerns among riders about ongoing safety issues. The cycling community is now looking ahead to the upcoming Il Lombardia race.
