Thousands Attend Relief of Derry Parade in Londonderry

The Apprentice Boys' Relief of Derry parade is currently taking place in Londonderry, attracting thousands of attendees. This annual event commemorates the conclusion of the 1689 Siege of Derry and features over 7,000 members and 124 bands participating in the procession along the city's historic walls.

The day's events include a service of thanksgiving at St Columb's Cathedral and a pageant reenacting the siege. The main parade commenced around lunchtime, with police advising of traffic delays throughout the day. Organizers have worked for months to ensure minimal disruption for local businesses and residents.

David Hoey, general secretary of the Associated Clubs of the Apprentice Boys of Derry, noted that the celebrations are expected to significantly benefit the local economy, with many visitors booking accommodations well in advance. The parade, held annually on the second Saturday of August, marks a pivotal moment in Derry's history.
