Three Indian Weightlifters Accept Doping Bans Ahead of Commonwealth Games

Three Indian weightlifters, N Ajith, Harcharan Singh, and Vanshita Verma, have accepted doping bans after testing positive for banned substances prior to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Their acceptance of the charges comes after they were removed from India's 16-member squad.

Ajith and Harcharan, who tested positive for human growth hormone, received three-year bans, while Vanshita, whose sample contained two prohibited substances, was handed a four-year ban. The sanctions are effective retroactively, impacting their eligibility for upcoming competitions, including the Asian Games and the 2028 Olympics.

This incident has further strained India's weightlifting reputation, as repeated anti-doping rule violations have led to a reduction in the country's qualification quota for the Games. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in India's anti-doping efforts, with the country facing the highest positivity rate in global testing.
