Tigers Assign Tanner Rainey to Triple-A Toledo

The Detroit Tigers have assigned relief pitcher Tanner Rainey to Triple-A Toledo following his designation for assignment. Rainey has agreed to the minor league assignment after being DFA'd earlier this week.

Throughout the season, Rainey primarily played under a minor league contract with the Mud Hens and was called up to the Tigers three weeks ago. In his brief stint with the team, he appeared in six games, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs. Despite this performance, he struggled with control, issuing eight walks and hitting one batter, along with four wild pitches.

Rainey has shown potential with a fastball averaging 96-97 mph and a quality slider, achieving a 2.32 ERA in Triple-A over 42 2/3 innings while striking out over a third of batters faced. However, his high walk rate of over 14% led teams to avoid adding him to their major league rosters. He will aim to improve his performance in the coming weeks as he looks to return to the MLB level before becoming a free agent this winter.
