Tigers Sign Austin Gomber to Minor League Deal

The Detroit Tigers have signed pitcher Austin Gomber to a minor league deal, as reported by the MLB.com transaction tracker. Gomber will report to Triple-A Toledo following his release from a minor league contract with the Braves earlier this week.

In addition to Gomber's signing, the Tigers have assigned right-handed reliever Andre Granillo to Toledo after he cleared outright waivers. Gomber, who has a combined 6.01 ERA over 82 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season, has struggled with a low strikeout rate and home runs. He previously played for the Texas Rangers and has now joined his third team this season.

Gomber's performance has raised concerns, particularly regarding his declining velocity, averaging 90.2 mph on his fastball. The Tigers, having traded pitchers Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, are looking to bolster their rotation and bullpen depth, especially with Jackson Jobe returning from the injured list soon. Granillo, meanwhile, has faced challenges this season, posting a 6.23 ERA over the last two years.
