Tom Watson Highlights Common Grip Mistakes Among Amateur Golfers
Tom Watson has pointed out that many amateur golfers tend to use grips that are too weak, which can limit their potential on the course. He stresses that the grip is a crucial aspect of the game, as it is the only connection between the golfer and the club during swings.
Many beginners start with a grip that feels natural, such as a baseball grip, but Watson advises that golfers should be willing to adjust their grip if it negatively affects their game. In a 2012 article for Golf Digest, Watson explained that a proper grip is essential for a good swing, noting that improper hand placement can prevent golfers from playing to their full capabilities.
Watson prefers the Vardon overlapping grip, which he believes helps unify the hands and improve wrist movement. He also recommends using molded practice grips to learn the correct hand positions. He warns that a weak grip often leads to an open clubface at impact, resulting in shots veering to the right, while a grip that is too strong can close the clubface. Current world number one Scottie Scheffler is known to practice with training aids to ensure his grip remains correct, highlighting the importance of fundamentals in golf.
