Toni Elías Claims Historic Victory at Portuguese Grand Prix
On October 15, 2006, Toni Elías secured his first and only victory in the premier class at the Portuguese Grand Prix, finishing just 0.002 seconds ahead of Valentino Rossi, which remains the smallest winning margin in MotoGP history.
Elías, starting from 13th in the championship standings, was not favored to win. Rossi, who began the race from pole position, initially led, but Elías climbed through the ranks, overtaking Rossi with seven laps to go. The final lap saw a dramatic exchange between the two riders, culminating in Elías's narrow victory.
This win allowed Nicky Hayden to maintain his championship hopes, as he was only eight points behind Rossi heading into the season finale. Although Elías never won another MotoGP race, he later became the inaugural Moto2 world champion and added another title in MotoAmerica in 2017.
