Toronto Blue Jays Focus on Draft Success with Cole Carlon and Will Brick
The Toronto Blue Jays have strategically focused their draft resources on two key players, Cole Carlon and Will Brick, following challenges with their signing-bonus pool and a drop in their first-round pick. Carlon, a left-handed pitcher from Arizona State, was selected at No. 39 and signed for $2.4 million, while Brick, a prep catcher from Memphis, was picked in the fourth round for $2.5 million. Together, they represent 88 percent of the Blue Jays' available funds for amateur scouting.
Marc Tramuta, the amateur scouting director, expressed satisfaction with acquiring what they viewed as first-round talent within the top four rounds. The Blue Jays also expanded their asset base through trades, adding pitchers Dasan Hill and John Klein, along with infielder Dameury Pena, while parting with shortstop Arjun Nimmala in a deal for Jose Soriano.
Carlon, who stands six-foot-five and weighs 230 pounds, is seen as a significant addition to the team's pitching prospects. He transitioned from a reliever to a starter in college, showcasing a mid-90s fastball and a slider that helped him strike out 133 batters in 83.2 innings. His development will focus on enhancing his changeup to support his pitching arsenal as he aims to become a major leaguer.
