Torreense Set for Historic Europa League Home Match Against Sunderland
Torreense, a club from Portugal's second division, is preparing to host Sunderland in their inaugural European home match as part of the Europa League. This historic event will take place at the Municipal Stadium in Leiria, as their own Estadio Manuel Marques does not meet UEFA's requirements.
The team, which has not played in the top flight since the 1991-92 season, qualified for the Europa League after defeating Sporting in the Taca de Portugal final. This victory marked a significant achievement, as they became the first second division team to win the cup since its current format began in 1938.
Despite facing challenges, including a recent promotion play-off defeat, Torreense has made 19 new signings to strengthen their squad. The club aims to leverage their Europa League participation for financial growth and sustainable development, with hopes of attracting more support and investment.
