Toto Wolff Concerned Over Mercedes Drivers' Battle at Monza

Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, voiced his concerns about the fierce competition between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell at the Italian Grand Prix, stating it could have resulted in a disastrous outcome for the team.

Antonelli, starting from 19th due to a grid penalty, made an impressive climb to second place within 16 laps. A 12-lap duel with Russell ensued, during which they exchanged the lead multiple times. A virtual safety car allowed Antonelli to pit and rejoin the race just 14 seconds behind Russell. With fresh tires, he caught up with Russell, leading to a tense battle in the final laps.

Despite the close racing, both drivers finished in a 1-2 position, with Antonelli ahead by four seconds. Wolff considered intervening during the race, as he felt the situation was precarious. He reflected on the incident where Russell cut a corner while Antonelli slid into the gravel, acknowledging it could have jeopardized their race result. Wolff emphasized the importance of discussing this experience to shape future racing strategies.
