Toto Wolff Open to Changes in F1 Engine Regulations
Toto Wolff has indicated that while Mercedes currently holds a strong position under the new Formula 1 power unit regulations, he is not committed to maintaining this engine concept in the long term.
Wolff revealed that he is engaged in discussions with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Stefano Domenicali, and other engine manufacturers regarding the next generation of engines. He has voiced criticism about certain aspects of the current engines, particularly the lengthy rev-up period before races.
Ben Sulayem has expressed a preference for a return to a V8 engine with a reduced electric component, aiming for a configuration of approximately 80 percent combustion power and 20 percent electric, targeting around 1000 horsepower. GPDA chairman Alex Wurz noted that drivers have significantly influenced the shift away from extreme regulations, although changes to the engine specifications will be gradual over the next two years.
