Toto Wolff Supports George Russell After Sprint Crash in Singapore
Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, expressed support for George Russell after he crashed during the Sprint race at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix. The incident occurred when Russell, leading the race, collided with the barriers in wet conditions, prompting the team to undertake a rapid car rebuild to prepare for qualifying.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Russell managed to qualify sixth, while his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured fourth. However, Russell will start the main race from the back due to a mandatory engine penalty. Wolff noted that the crash was unexpected, attributing it to the difficult conditions of the damp street circuit.
The mechanics successfully repaired the car in time for qualifying, although some telemetry data was compromised. Wolff acknowledged their impressive work but mentioned that the car did not feel as good as before. Meanwhile, Antonelli's car showed improvement with the new aerodynamic upgrades, leading to a more competitive performance.
