Toyota and Honda Face Challenges from Proposed U.S. Tariffs on Canadian Imports

U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a 50% tariff on Canadian car imports, which could significantly affect Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda. These companies produce over three-quarters of the cars made in Canada and may need to close some production lines if the tariffs are implemented on January 1.

The timing of this proposal is particularly challenging for Toyota and Honda, as they are already facing stiff competition from low-cost Chinese electric vehicles in various markets. In the U.S., Canadian-built vehicles represent a substantial portion of their sales, with nearly a quarter of Honda's and 17% of Toyota's U.S. sales coming from Canada.

The tariffs could severely impact the Canadian auto industry, which produces about 1.2 million cars annually and supports approximately 427,000 jobs. Analysts suggest that if the tariffs are enacted, both automakers may need to redirect their Canadian production to other markets, complicating their supply chains.
