Trevor Immelman Defends Presidents Cup Format Amid Criticism

The Walker Cup concluded with Team GB&I achieving an unexpected comeback victory at Lahinch Golf Club, and attention now shifts to the upcoming Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, starting September 24.

Trevor Immelman, the former captain of the Presidents Cup International Team, expressed his irritation towards critics advocating for changes to the tournament's format. He highlighted the passion and commitment of the players involved, countering claims that the event is lopsided, as the U.S. holds a significant 13-1-1 overall record against the International Team.

Immelman noted that the current format, which includes 30 points awarded over four days of match play, has already seen adjustments in the past, such as the reduction of total points from 34 to 30. He will be returning as an assistant captain for the 2026 event, while Brandt Snedeker leads the American side with notable selections, including Jacob Bridgeman and 21-year-old Jackson Koivun.
