Triathlete Completes Marathon After Running 21 Miles with Broken Bike
During the IRONMAN Kalmar, André Du Rietz encountered a significant setback when a tire valve broke with 21 miles remaining on the bike course. Instead of abandoning the race, he opted to run to the transition area, where he switched to the marathon segment.
Du Rietz's journey began over a decade ago, but after facing health issues and injuries, he returned to triathlon training and aimed for a strong performance. His goal for the race was to finish in 8:30, a time he believed would qualify him for the IRONMAN World Championship.
Despite his initial success in the swim and bike segments, the mechanical failure forced him to adapt. He completed the bike leg in 7:46:59 and then ran the marathon in 5:17, finishing the race with a total time of 14:22:31. Although he did not achieve his qualifying time, Du Rietz expressed pride in his perseverance and plans to compete in future IRONMAN events.
