Tropical Storm Isaias Expected to Strengthen into Hurricane
Tropical Storm Isaias developed in the Gulf on Wednesday and is anticipated to become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, according to forecasters.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami indicated that Isaias will intensify as it approaches the U.S. Gulf Coast, likely reaching hurricane status by Thursday. It may peak as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph before it weakens near the coast.
Current forecasts suggest Isaias could make landfall anywhere from eastern Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle. In preparation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 25 counties. The storm poses an increasing risk of dangerous winds and storm surges, with expected rainfall of 3 to 6 inches in some areas, and potentially up to 10 inches in localized spots.
