Tropical Storm Rachel Causes Erosion and Fissure Near PCH in Laguna Beach
In Laguna Beach, California, erosion caused by Tropical Storm Rachel has led to the formation of a significant fissure near the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). YouTuber and skimboarder Blair Conklin reported that the crack is approximately ten feet away from the roadway.
The region has experienced severe weather this week, with high tides and powerful waves impacting the shoreline. While Newport has garnered much attention for storm damage, Laguna Beach is also facing challenges. The fissure has prompted CalTrans to close one lane of southbound PCH from Irvine Cove to Reef Point Drive.
Conklin expressed concern that the situation may worsen, as the cliff has not yet collapsed, but he anticipates that it could happen soon due to ongoing surf conditions. He noted the vulnerability of the area, highlighting the potential for further damage.
