Trump Announces Oil and Mineral Exploration in Greenland
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that preparations for oil, gas, and mineral exploration in Greenland are set to begin, highlighting the island's strategic significance for US and European security.
This announcement follows a security agreement signed between the US and the leaders of Greenland and Denmark, which came after Trump's previous threats regarding the territory's strategic Arctic location. Greenland's position is crucial as it lies on the shortest missile route between Russia and the United States, making it a key area for Trump's proposed defense initiatives.
Trump noted that Greenland has untapped rare earth deposits and could play a vital role as climate change opens new shipping routes. He claimed that the available oil resources in Greenland are significantly greater than those found elsewhere globally, although he did not provide specifics on American involvement. Concerns among locals arose following reports of US oil company activities in eastern Greenland.
In September, Trump formalized a security deal that includes the establishment of two new military bases in southern and eastern Greenland, complementing the existing Pituffik base in the north.
