Trump Signs Executive Order to Split MMR Vaccine into Three Shots
On Monday, Donald Trump signed an executive order proposing to divide the MMR vaccine for children into three separate doses administered at different appointments. This decision reflects his ongoing focus on autism, which he linked to vaccination in a recent press conference.
The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is typically administered as a single shot, making it more convenient for parents. Experts argue that splitting the vaccine would not enhance child safety and could lead to increased costs and more injections. Additionally, the U.S. does not currently produce single-dose versions of the MMR vaccine.
Trump's order also reduces the recommended vaccinations for children from 18 to 11, eliminating vaccines for several diseases, including rotavirus and meningococcal disease. While executive orders do not have the force of law, this move may influence vaccination policies in Republican-led states and contribute to confusion among parents regarding vaccination schedules.
