Trump's Claim About U.S. Banks in Canada Debunked

During a recent meeting with U.S. travel executives, President Donald Trump made an incorrect assertion that U.S. banks are prohibited from operating in Canada. This statement arose when he was asked about potential trade negotiations between the two nations.

Experts clarified that while U.S. banks may encounter certain restrictions, they are not banned from entering the Canadian market. Currently, 15 U.S.-based banks operate in Canada, either as branches or subsidiaries, according to the Canadian Bankers Association. Notably, eight Canadian banks also function within the U.S.

U.S. banks typically operate in Canada as Schedule III institutions, which face specific regulatory challenges. Despite these hurdles, U.S. banks provide a variety of financial services in Canada, including corporate lending and investment banking. The White House has not yet commented on Trump's remarks.
