Tua Tagovailoa Named Starting QB for Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have appointed Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for the regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. Tagovailoa, who is beginning his first season with the Falcons, secured the position over Michael Penix Jr., a first-round draft pick from Washington.

Tagovailoa is looking to improve after a challenging previous season where he recorded 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and a completion rate of 67.7%, alongside a career-high 15 interceptions. His performance has declined since a standout year in 2023, where he led Miami to the playoffs with 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Penix, who started nine games last season, ended his year prematurely due to a torn ACL sustained in a game against the Carolina Panthers. His recovery from knee injuries impacted his ability to compete fully during training camp, allowing Tagovailoa to take the lead. Despite a rocky preseason start, Tagovailoa expressed his commitment to improving and learning from his performance.
