Tua Tagovailoa Named Starting Quarterback for Falcons' Week 1 Matchup
Tua Tagovailoa has been appointed as the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons for their Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This announcement was made by the Falcons on Monday, concluding a lengthy competition with Michael Penix Jr.
The decision marks a significant opportunity for Tagovailoa to revitalize his career after being released by the Miami Dolphins. He joined the Falcons this offseason and has been under the guidance of head coach Kevin Stefanski, who deemed him the most prepared candidate for the role.
Throughout training camp, Tagovailoa received more first-team practice time due to Penix's recovery from a torn ACL. Although Penix was cleared for practice late in camp, he did not participate in any preseason games. Stefanski confirmed that Penix will be inactive for the opener, with Cooper Rush serving as Tagovailoa's backup. Despite this, the competition for the starting position may not be over, as the Falcons could consider Penix again if Tagovailoa encounters difficulties.
