Twins Sign Germán Márquez to Minor League Contract

The Minnesota Twins have signed right-handed pitcher Germán Márquez to a minor league contract, as reported by Dan Hayes of The Athletic. Márquez, who is 31 years old, will join the Triple-A St. Paul team.

Previously a dependable starter, Márquez logged 975 1/3 innings from 2017 to 2022, ranking sixth in the majors during that period. However, he has faced challenges since undergoing Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Last year, he made 26 starts but struggled with a 6.70 ERA. This season, he signed a one-year deal with the Padres but was released after posting a 5.26 ERA in 13 appearances.

The Twins are looking to bolster their rotation, which has been affected by injuries to several pitchers, including Joe Ryan. With Márquez on a minor league deal, the financial risk is minimal, as the Padres will cover most of his salary, leaving Minnesota to pay only the prorated league minimum if he joins the major league roster.
