Two Survivors Rescued from Nepal Hydropower Tunnel After Devastating Floods
On September 4, rescuers in Nepal retrieved two survivors from a tunnel associated with the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station, following a disaster that occurred nine days earlier. The incident was triggered by a glacier collapse that unleashed a torrent of ice, rock, and mud, resulting in over 1,300 fatalities and leaving more than 5,600 individuals unaccounted for.
The two rescued workers, Kabir Maharjan and Sanjay Sah, were among those trapped when the disaster struck on August 26. They were taken to an army hospital in Kathmandu, where their conditions are stable. Maharjan is unable to move his limbs, while Sah's injuries are not deemed critical. Sah had remained in a control room to assist others during the emergency.
Rescue operations continue in the area, with support from international experts. The disaster has caused significant infrastructure damage, with losses estimated at approximately $2.56 billion. The Nepalese government is also facing challenges in locating hundreds of missing individuals, including foreign nationals.
