Tyron Woodley Discusses Mental Health Challenges Following Title Loss
Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has opened up about his mental health challenges following his unanimous decision loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235. This defeat, which occurred in 2019, significantly impacted Woodley, leading him to experience a deep sense of depression.
During an interview, Woodley expressed feelings of being ridiculed, believing that both the UFC and Usman were laughing at him after his title loss. He described a tumultuous period in his life, including a divorce and financial struggles, which compounded his emotional distress. Despite a successful title reign where he defended his championship four times, his relationship with UFC CEO Dana White was strained, with both parties exchanging criticisms.
After losing the title, Woodley faced a series of defeats in the octagon, ultimately leaving the UFC in 2021. He acknowledged that support from fellow fighter Demetrious Johnson played a crucial role in helping him navigate his mental health issues during this difficult time.
