UCLA Appoints Tim Harris as New Athletic Director Following Martin Jarmond's Dismissal

UCLA has announced the dismissal of athletic director Martin Jarmond, who held the position for six years, and has appointed Tim Harris as his successor. The change was communicated by Chancellor Julio Frenk, who emphasized the need for a new direction for UCLA Athletics.

Harris, who previously served as the president of business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers, will take on the roles of CEO and athletic director, working pro bono. He is a UCLA alumnus, having graduated in 1989 and played on the men's soccer team.

During Jarmond's tenure, UCLA's athletic department faced significant financial challenges, accumulating a total deficit of $241 million over seven years. The university has been providing financial support to the department, which has seen a reduction in its deficit to $21.6 million for the upcoming fiscal year. Frenk cited the need for a sustainable financial model for UCLA Athletics as a key reason for the leadership change.
