Uefa's Roberto Rosetti Addresses VAR Concerns and Launches Clear Line Portal

Roberto Rosetti, the chief of Uefa referees, recently addressed issues surrounding video assistant referee (VAR) reviews, stating that some interventions were not aligned with the essence of football. This statement followed a meeting with refereeing leaders from major European leagues aimed at establishing a more uniform approach to officiating.

During the discussions, Rosetti acknowledged the difficulties in achieving consistency across different leagues, particularly regarding handball interpretations. He noted that the Premier League had the lowest rate of VAR interventions in Europe last season, with significant variations in handball penalty frequencies among leagues.

To enhance understanding of VAR, Uefa has launched the Clear Line portal, which provides detailed video examples of various situations. Rosetti emphasized the need for referees to maintain their authority on the pitch and for VAR to be used only in clear and obvious cases. He expressed concerns about the time taken for reviews, suggesting that lengthy processes could undermine credibility with fans.
