Ukraine Accused of Attacking Fuel Trucks Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
The head of Russia's state nuclear energy corporation has accused Ukraine of attacking diesel fuel trucks on Friday, which led to the deaths of two Russian servicemen and injuries to others. This incident reportedly endangered safety at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, located in Ukraine and currently under Russian control.
Alexei Likhachev stated that the strikes occurred near the plant's perimeter, impacting fuel trucks essential for the facility's operations. The diesel generators at the plant are crucial for cooling the nuclear fuel when external power sources are unavailable, a situation that occurred for nearly three weeks recently.
Ukraine has called for Russia to relinquish control of the plant and return its operations to Kyiv, a request that Moscow has declined. The International Atomic Energy Agency has a permanent observer team at the site to monitor safety and has previously mediated disputes between the two sides.
