Ukrainian Sports Minister Criticizes FIA for Lifting Russia Ban
Ukrainian Minister for Youth and Sport Matvii Bidnyi has criticized the FIA for lifting the ban on Russian competitors, asserting that the reasons for the ban remain unchanged. The ban was initially imposed in February 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Bidnyi highlighted the ongoing violence in Ukraine, mentioning a recent drone attack in Kyiv that occurred shortly before his comments. He expressed disappointment that international sports organizations are easing restrictions on Russia, which he views as undermining global pressure against the aggressor.
He noted that while the FIA has lifted its ban, other sports organizations like World Athletics have maintained theirs. Bidnyi emphasized the connection between elite sports in Russia and state propaganda, labeling it as sportswashing. The Ukrainian government reports significant losses in sports due to the war, including the deaths of 775 athletes and the destruction of over 925 sports facilities.
