UMass Ends Long Losing Streak with Victory Over Rutgers
In a stunning upset during Week 1 of college football, UMass defeated Rutgers 37-21 on Thursday, marking the Minutemen's first win against an FBS opponent since October 2023.
UMass, which had a winless season last year, dominated the game from the start, scoring on its first four drives and not punting until late in the third quarter. The Minutemen entered the game as 29.5-point underdogs but showcased a strong performance across all phases.
Quarterback Pop Watson, who transferred from Virginia Tech, was instrumental in the victory, completing 18 of 21 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 40 yards. The UMass defense improved significantly from last season, generating seven tackles for loss and five sacks, and winning the turnover battle 4-0.
