Umpire Manny Gonzalez Exits Game Due to Heat Exhaustion
Manny Gonzalez, the home plate umpire for the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres, exited the field on Monday due to heat exhaustion before the fifth inning.
The incident occurred as Gonzalez, 46, required assistance to leave the field but managed to walk off on his own. Trainers attended to him while he sat near home plate, and he was escorted down the third-base line. Following a 14-minute delay, the game resumed.
First base umpire D.J. Reyburn took over the home plate duties, while Ron Kulpa and Tom Hanahan continued at first and third base, respectively. The game took place on a warm evening with temperatures reaching 90 degrees and a heat index warning in effect.
