Understanding Sartorius Muscle Pain in Runners
Runners experiencing hip and knee pain often attribute their discomfort to the iliotibial band, but the sartorius muscle may also be a significant factor. This muscle, the longest in the body, crosses both the hip and knee joints, making it active during running and susceptible to pain.
According to sports medicine experts, tightness in larger hip flexor muscles can strain the sartorius, leading to discomfort in the front of the hip and along the quadriceps. Overstriding and excessive sprinting can further aggravate this muscle, causing pain or cramping.
To alleviate sartorius pain, it is essential to address muscle tightness and strength imbalances. Stretching hip flexors and strengthening opposing muscle groups can help. Recovery time varies, with improvements typically seen within one to four weeks for tightness, while muscle strains may take longer. Severe symptoms warrant a visit to a sports physician.
