Unusual Twists in the 2027 AFL Round 1 Fixture
The 2027 AFL fixture has introduced several unexpected elements for Round 1, including a notable change in the traditional scheduling of the Richmond-Carlton match, which has been moved from its usual Thursday night slot to Saturday afternoon.
This shift marks the first time since 2007 that the match will not take place on Thursday. Richmond has indicated that this scheduling is part of a one-year arrangement and aims to return to the Thursday night slot in 2028.
The season will kick off with a Wednesday night game featuring Sydney and Geelong, a rarity that has occurred only twice in the last two decades. The SCG will host this opener, while the MCG will be unavailable due to the 150th Anniversary cricket Test. The AFL has scheduled four games at the MCG within 48 hours, including a double-header on Saturday.
