US Approves Sale of 500 Patriot Missiles to Ukraine
The United States has sanctioned the sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine, which are essential for defending against increasing Russian aerial assaults. The US State Department announced that the advanced PAC-3 interceptor missiles will cost $2.1 billion and will be funded by Ukraine's allies in Europe and Canada.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that it may take several years for the missiles to be delivered. He has urged the US to expedite the process, emphasizing that the Patriots are the only effective means to counter Russia's ballistic missiles. The funding for this purchase will come from donations from Canada, Germany, and Norway, as well as national funds supported by the European Union.
The principal contractor for this sale will be Lockheed Martin, and the US has clarified that no American funds will be used. Amid ongoing tensions, Zelensky has expressed urgency for the interceptors, especially as Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
